Stanford Wearable Lab App Privacy Policy

Stanford Wearable Lab App is an educational app that helps learners access and download their own wearable data for learning activities.

Effective Date: June 17, 2026
Updated: Aug 17, 2026

Important privacy summary: Stanford Wearable Lab does not collect, store, transmit, sell, or share learner data through this app. Learners use the app to download their own wearable data to their own local storage. The Stanford Wearable Lab team does not access learner data through the app.

Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to read this Privacy Policy. This policy explains how Stanford Wearable Lab handles privacy in connection with the Stanford Wearable Lab app.

Stanford Wearable Lab is provided for educational and informational purposes only. It is designed to help learners access, download, and better understand their own wearable data, such as heart rate, activity, sleep, ECG, SpO₂, respiratory rate, temperature-related signals, and other data made available by supported wearable devices or health platforms.

No Data Collection by Stanford Wearable Lab

Stanford Wearable Lab does not collect any data from learners through this app.

The app is intended only to allow learners to download wearable data for their own educational purposes. Stanford Wearable Lab does not receive, store, or process learner wearable data on Stanford servers through this app.

Local Storage and Learner Control

Learners may use the app to download their wearable data to their own device, computer, or other local storage location selected by the learner.

Learners are responsible for protecting any files they download, save, move, upload, or share. Stanford Wearable Lab does not control the learner’s local device, storage location, backup settings, file-sharing settings, or third-party cloud storage accounts.

Use with Stanford Data Ocean

Learners may choose to use their downloaded data later in educational modules on Stanford Data Ocean. Those modules may help learners explore wearable data, digital health signals, visualizations, algorithms, and AI-supported educational insights.

When learners choose to use their data in Stanford Data Ocean, the data is used within the learner’s own educational notebook environment and dedicated Stanford Data Ocean account. The Stanford Wearable Lab team does not access learner uploaded data, notebook data, analysis outputs, or other data used within Stanford Data Ocean unless a learner separately chooses to share it.

Third-Party Devices and Services

Stanford Wearable Lab may help learners access data made available by third-party wearable devices, apps, APIs, export tools, or health platforms. Stanford Wearable Lab does not control and is not responsible for third-party devices or services.

Third-party services may have their own terms, privacy policies, permissions, export features, data accuracy limitations, outages, and account settings. Learners should review the applicable terms and privacy policies for any third-party service they use.

No Advertising or Sale of Data

Stanford Wearable Lab does not sell learner data. The app does not use learner wearable data for advertising, marketing, or third-party analytics.

Educational Use Only

Stanford Wearable Lab is not a medical device and is not intended to provide medical advice, diagnosis, treatment recommendations, clinical decision support, or emergency services.

Wearable data may be incomplete, inaccurate, delayed, or affected by device limitations, sensor quality, software changes, missing wear time, motion artifacts, or other factors. Learners should not rely on the app, wearable data, visualizations, algorithms, or educational insights for medical, clinical, legal, insurance, employment, or safety-related decisions.

If you have health concerns, symptoms, or medical questions, contact a qualified healthcare professional. If you think you may be experiencing a medical emergency, call emergency services immediately.

Protection of Google User Data

Stanford Wearable Lab uses administrative and technical safeguards to protect Google user data accessed through the app. Authorization to access Google user data is provided through Google’s OAuth authorization process. The app requests only the permissions needed to provide the user-requested data download functionality. Google user data is transmitted using encrypted HTTPS connections and is not stored in a Stanford Wearable Lab server or centrally accessible data repository. Access credentials and authorization tokens are handled securely and are used only to provide the functionality authorized by the learner. They are not sold, shared for advertising, or made available to unauthorized third parties. After wearable data are downloaded to a location selected by the learner, the learner is responsible for protecting the downloaded files and controlling access to their device, local storage, backups, and any third-party storage service they choose to use.

Google User Data Retention and Deletion

Stanford Wearable Lab does not retain downloaded Google user data on Stanford Wearable Lab servers. Google user data accessed through the app is used only to complete the learner-requested data access or download and is not maintained in a Stanford Wearable Lab data repository after that process is completed. Files downloaded by a learner remain in the storage location selected by the learner until the learner deletes them. Learners may delete these files at any time using the file-management or storage controls available on their device or storage provider. Learners may revoke the app’s access to their Google Account at any time through their Google Account security and third-party access settings. Revoking access prevents the app from accessing additional Google user data but does not automatically delete files that the learner previously downloaded to their own device or storage location. Where authorization credentials or tokens are stored by the app, they are retained only for as long as necessary to maintain the user-authorized connection or provide the requested functionality. They are removed or rendered unusable when the learner disconnects the applicable Google account, revokes authorization, or deletes the app, subject to the operating system’s storage and backup behavior.

Google API Data and AI/ML Services

Stanford Wearable Lab does not access, collect, store, process, or transmit Google Workspace API or Google Photos API user data to Stanford servers or to third-party artificial intelligence or machine-learning providers. The Wearable Lab app does not use Google Workspace or Google Photos API user data for training, developing, or improving generalized or foundation AI/ML models, and does not sell or transfer such data for advertising, model training, or other secondary purposes. The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Stanford Wearable Lab does not directly integrate Google Workspace or Google Photos API user data with third-party AI/ML services. Stanford Data Ocean is a separate Stanford platform. A learner may independently choose to upload their de-identified health data to Stanford Data Ocean and may affirmatively initiate AI-assisted analysis within that environment. Where Stanford Data Ocean uses third-party AI (currently, Claude Haiku 4.5), such services are used under applicable terms and configurations that do not permit submitted data to be used to train or improve generalized or foundation AI/ML models.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

Stanford may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If this policy is updated, the updated version will be posted with a new updated date. Continued use of Stanford Wearable Lab after a policy update means you accept the updated Privacy Policy.
